Additional Details

One of the later octavo editions of McKenney and Hall. Hall's name is here omitted from the title page. The title page boasts of "One Hundred Portraits from the Indian Gallery" down from the 120 of previous editions, but the number of included plates varies from set to set. Other recent sets at auction have included 95 and 101 plates. This set matches the plate list for Volumes I (40 plates) and III (11 plates), and has 46 (of 49?) plates in Volume II, which was bound without a plate list. Howes M129n ("aa"); this edition not in Sabin. Provenance: original owner Samuel Twybill Brown (circa 1828-1879) of Bergen Point, NJ, president of the Bowery Savings Bank, who died without issue; by descent to his brother's great-grandson, the consignor.
