first edition. Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944) was an artist and radical activist who had come to know many American Indians while fighting in the Nez Perce War. His 14-year-old son William Maxwell Wood and friend Lewis McArthur began printing the book at their "Attic Press" in 1898, and finished three years later. None at auction since a Swann sale, 12 July 1979, lot 46.
