Goes Ahead was a Crow who had served in his youth as a scout under Custer at Little Bighorn. Curtis selected a different image of Goes Ahead for Volume IV of his The North American Indian, facing page 100. This alternate pose was clearly taken at the same sitting. Curtis sometimes created cyanotype field prints on location, but these albumen prints were likely created back in his studio.
