(AMERICAN INDIANS--PHOTOGRAPHS.) Rinehart, Frank A. Erastus Cheroquese, U.S.S., Maricopa. Silver print, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, on original plain mount; minimal wear; captioned, numbered 1428, and signed in the negative. Omaha, NE, 1899

Additional Details

The sitter appears in official records as Cheroquis Erastus, a private in the Indian Police at Pima, AZ; he was also a leader in his local Mormon church, per the Deseret Weekly of 26 April 1890, page 595. Here he wears a badge reading "U.S. Indian School Police." As was typically required for the Indian Police, his coat and hair are in the white man's style. An unusual choice for Rinehart, who usually preferred subjects in more traditional garb. Here is a man who appears confident in his decision to adopt the new ways. No other copies traced.
