Estimate: $ 1,000 - $ 1,500
(AMERICAN INDIANS--PHOTOGRAPHY.) Cabinet card of Geronimo as a prisoner of war, holding a pistol in his lap. Silver print, 5½ x 3¾ inches, on original plain mount with "W.H. Jackson" inked stamp on verso; minor wear; captioned on verso in early hand "Geronimo, chief of the notorious band of Arizona Apaches (now a prisoner of war at Ft. Sill, O.T.)" Chickasha, Indian Territory, circa late 1890s

Additional Details

The inked stamp on verso suggests that the image was by William Henry Jackson, but other portraits from this same sitting are generally credited to William Irwin of the firm Irwin & Mankin (for example, see next lot).

With--a group office portrait of the staff of the Daily Oklahoman, 5 x 7 inches on original plain mount, with identifications on verso, 21 December 1909

and--a beaded amulet made from a small vertebra, 1½ x 4 inches. The three items are accompanied by a clipped dealer description suggesting that this is a "Chiricahua Apache beaded buffalo amulet (? by Geronimo)--definitely Chiricahua," and asserting that the three items were acquired together with "Great Provenance." Unfortunately, we don't have anything else to share about the great provenance, and cannot vouch for the amulet.
