Additional Details

The artist and impresario George Catlin brought this troupe of Ioways to Paris along with his Indian Gallery in the summer of 1845, an adventure recounted in his "Adventures of the Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians in England, France, and Belgium." This image dates from their residency at the Salle Valentino. The Ioways are accompanied at left by manager George H.C. Melody and Jeffrey Doraway, an African-American who had been raised among the Ioways and served as their interpreter. Only one copy listed in WorldCat, and no other copy has been noted on the auction market.
