Traces many hundreds of departures from various piers in New York and Jersey City, with columns noting departure date, voyage number for a given ship leaving New York, the weight of freight, cost in pounds sterling for each ton, and the forward and aft draft on the ship. Later listings include additional columns listing the number of passengers by class, etc. The manuscript is extremely useful in tracking the history of ships in the American Line. For instance, a listing will show that the "St. Louis" left on its 114th voyage out of New York on 12 December 1903. All the well-known American Line ships are present: "St. Paul," "St. Louis," "Philadelphia," "New York," "Illinois," and many lesser ships in the line or subsidiary or related lines: "British Crown," "British Empire," "British King," "Merion," etc. Ships associated with the International Navigation Company are listed as well (i. e. "Pennland"). Various hands made notations over the years, suggesting that this was an official record kept by members of the firm in New York. Altogether, this log offers a concise and complete history of the sailings of American Line ships from New York harbor during much of the line's long history.
