Portrait of jazz composer, pianist, and lyricist Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967).
Silver print, the image measuring 241x190 mm; 9½x7½ inches, the original (trimmed) mount 279x263 mm; 11x10⅜ inches. Circa 1940s.

Strayhorn is best-known for his long-time collaboration with Duke Ellington. The partnership lasted nearly three decades, and his compositions include "Take the 'A' Train," "Chelsea Bridge," "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing," and "Lush Life." As Ellington described him, "Billy Strayhorn was my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brain waves in his head, and his in mine." He also had a major influence on the singer Lena Horne. Strayhorn was openly gay to his friends and members of Ellington's band.
