(AMERICAN RESORT ADVERTISEMENT.) Krebs Lithographic Company. Montezuma Hotel - Las Vegas Hot Springs, New Mexico. Cincinnati, circa 1882

Additional Details

Uncommon early view of the first Montezuma Hotel which was built in 1881 and catastrophically burned in 1884; a second version was built in 1885 and it too burned to the ground that same year; a third structure was re-built in 1885 and still stands, with major restorations along the way, as the United World College of the American West's campus.

Envisioned and built by the Santa Fe Railroad Company, the Montezuma was the largest and grandest late-nineteenth-century resort in New Mexico Territory. Our print is genuinely rare: market records reveal an example included in a 1962 Midland Notes catalog; no copies are listed in OCLC, though one example can be found in the Jay T. Last collection at the Huntington Library.
