INCLUDES LETTER ON WASHINGTON'S INTEREST IN PREPARING FOR POSSIBLE INVASION (AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) ALEXANDER, WILLIAM ("LORD STIRLING"). Two items, each Signed, "Stirling": Partly-printed Document * Autograph Letter, to NJ Governor William Livingston. The document, agreeing to repay David Johnston's loan to him of £96.8.2. Additionally signed by a witness. The letter, arranging a meeting to discuss the status of George Washington's requests concerning the state's preparation for the possibility of invasion. Each 1 page, folio; verso of document glued to integral blank, document with complete separations at horizontal folds repaired verso with paper, lower left corner of document detached, moderate staining in left margin of document, left margin of letter torn away leaving irregular edge with minor loss to few letters of text, letter mounted along left edge to sheet trimmed to size, folds. 2 April 1780: "His Excellency General Washington informs me that some time in December last he wrote to your Excellency concerning regulateing and Compleating the Beacon's and Signals necessary for Alarming the Inhabitants and Army in this State, in Case of an Invasion of it, by the Enemy; and also to fix upon Alarm posts and places of Rendevouz's [sic] for the Militia in Case of such an Event. As his Excellency has desired me to pay attention to this busyness, I must beg the favour of your Excellency to inform me what has been done in the matter; and as it may still be necessary to do more in order to Compleat the plan, I shall be glad to know where I can have the Honor of attending you an hour or two tomorrow morning."
