James Livingston (1747-1832) was a native New Yorker who had settled in Quebec in 1765. He raised a local militia in support of the American assault on Quebec in September 1775, a unit which was soon absorbed into the Continental Army as the First Canadian Regiment. It saw combat in several important battles. The present archive includes a pay roll of field and staff, dated 31 August 1777 (shortly before Saratoga); five pay rolls from Peter Van Rensalaer's company, including one covering the period of the Battle of Rhode Island; three other company pay rolls; and a muster roll of Captain James Robichaux's Company, 6 April 1779.
