Additional Details

A vivid account of the shipwreck of "La Bourgogne," a ship carrying 74 cannons and 1100 French troops en route to the West Indies after service in the American Revolution. It ran aground off the coast of Venezuela, resulting in the loss of all but a few hundred of the crew. Translated from the French: "The squadron under the command of Marquis Vaudreuil left Boston on 26 November 1782 towards Porto-Cabello [Dominica] in New Spain. The ship La Bourgogne . . . commanded by M. de Champ-Martin left the squadron . . . on February 3 . . . the ship was lost the same night . . . we were separated from the rest of the army who had no idea of our loss, and at day break we saw land three leagues in the distance . . . the sea was very strong . . ."
