Additional Details

William Drinkwater of New Milford, CT was one of the small party of Americans captured with Ethan Allen during an aborted assault on Montreal in September 1775. Nineteen of the men, including Allen and Drinkwater, remained together for at least a year aboard prison ships, and in prisons in New York and Halifax. Though Allen remained a prisoner through May 1778, Drinkwater was exchanged earlier. This document orders that Drinkwater be paid his lawful wages of £34 for his ordeal "while he was a prisoner &c having been taken in Canada with Col. Ethan Allen."
