Additional Details

Even more so than today, the first instinct of a Colonial legislator when faced with a fiscal crisis was to hold a lottery. Thus the Continental Congress authorized a lottery to finance the Revolution in November 1776. This lot includes: John Gibson. Autograph Letter Signed as U.S. Auditor General to "The Managers of the Continental Lottery." Ordering tickets to be sent "with all expedition . . . to the several states . . . No time should be lost in sending them to the Army and most if not all the states unsupplyed therewith." Baltimore, 14 February 1777 Robert Johnston. Autograph Letter Signed to "David Jackson or any of the other managers" in Philadelphia. Has returned 690 unsold tickets. Port Royal, VA, 15 August 1777. With his appended manuscript list of tickets.
