Additional Details

The French hero of the American Revolution is here depicted as leader of the National Guard of France, trying to maintain order during the early days of his own nation's revolution. He is depicted reviewing his troops. In the background to the left, a valet of African descent holds his horse, reminiscent of Trumbull's portrait of Washington--and also evocative of Lafayette's American servant and master spy, James Armistead Lafayette.

This was Debucourt's first work in mezzotint, inked "à la poupée"--the colors were applied directly to the plate (per the British Museum).
