This letter was part of the ongoing negotiation between two opposing generals over the passage of civilians between enemy lines. In part: "A Miss Sophia Jones whose father lives in Wood Bridge is desirous of passing in the next flagg with her effects to live with her family. She will be much obliged to you for your indulgence." Stirling was the only member of the peerage in the Continental Army, which obliged the Loyalist General Skinner to address his rebel enemy as "My Lord," probably much to his chagrin.
