On the eve of war, the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting announced their opposition not only to all wars on Quaker principle, but also "against every usurpation of power and authority, in opposition to the laws and government, and against all combinations, insurrections, conspiracies, and illegal assemblies," based on "our past experience of the clemency of the king and his royal ancestors."
