Additional Details

Ethan Allen rose to notoriety as leader of the Green Mountain Boys, defending the property rights of settlers in the disputed territory between New York and New Hampshire which later became Vermont. Their forceful techniques often strayed well outside the law into open rebellion. This incomplete proclamation orders the royal officers in the area to be "vigilant in suppressing the said riots . . . as well as for bringing to justice the perpetrators and authors of the said riots." Heading the list of these perpetrators is "Ethan Allen, sometime of Salisbury in the colony of Connecticut but late of Bennington" as well as his henchmen Seth Warner, Remember Baker, Robert Cockren, Peleg Sunderland, Silvanus Brown, James Brackenridge, and John Smith. £100 was offered for the capture of Allen and Baker, and £50 for the others. Copies of this proclamation would have been widely disseminated, and the full text has been published in several sources, including O'Callaghan's Documentary History of the State of New-York, pages IV:526-7. However, we have traced no other copies of this important order at auction.
