Additional Details

Vaudreuil was then commander of the French navy in America. Writing from his flagship while taking refuge in Haiti, he informs the Governor of Cuba of plans to escort an important American expedition. Translated from the French: "The Congress of the United States of America, having asked me to provide a ship of war to escort the Corvette Washington which is going to Havana, I have named Captain Tilly to command the vessel S.M. de Eveille to perform this mission." With this assistance, the General Washington proceeded safely to Havana and collected six hundred thousand pounds of specie, which was brought to the Continental government in Philadelphia. See Maclay, History of American Privateers, 186-191. In French, with a typed transcript and translation.
