Additional Details

This volume lists the specifications of hundreds of British naval vessels, many of which served during the American Revolution. For example, the HMS Roebuck is listed on page 20 as 140 feet in length, 116 feet and 4 3/8 inches in keel, 37.10 in breadth, 16.4 in depth, 886 tons, built for 300 men and 44 guns at Chatham in 1774. The abstract was compiled from research in the original British naval records by Captain James Scott for the use of Colonel Mark Beaufoy (1764-1827), who spent decades testing optimal naval architecture at London's Greenland Docks. The volume bears the bookplate of Colonel Beaufoy's son Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy (1786-1851), a noted book collector.
