Additional Details

Describes the parade and corner-stone ceremonies he had attended the day before, which "for numbers & brilliancy & appearance has never been exceeded": "Then there was good Lafayette in a barouche, he was cheered the whole distance from Boston to Bunker Hill. . . . Large bands of music played Old Yankee Doodle & other popular airs." When Daniel Webster told the assembled veterans "Fathers, fifty years ago this very hour, you were here, but how changed the scene," Walker broke down in tears as the "old survivors of the battle all rose & uncovered their white heads."
