Additional Details

John Wereat (1733-1799) was a leading figure in Georgia during and after the Revolution. Here he describes conditions in Georgia between the end of open hostilities and the official peace: "We are constantly pestered with outlying Tories who rob and frequently murder the inhabitants, besides which we are threatened with an attack from the Indians headed by W. McIntosh who are expected on the frontiers in a few days. . . . Generals Greene and Wayne keep the enemy pretty close in Charlestown and Savannah." Provenance: Hamilton auction, 14 January 1965, lot 179, to the consignor.
