Additional Details

first american edition, edited by Hugh Henry Ferguson and issued in the first months of the war for the use of the enthusiastic but haphazardly trained Continental Army. Includes a four-page dedication to General Washington, concluding with "wishes and prayers . . . for the safety and success of the brave Americans you command, till the arrival of that joyful day, when peace or conquest shall honorably terminate the dispute." This copy bears the ownership signature of Abraham Bradley, probably the captain who served in the Connecticut state troops in 1776, and father of noted cartographer of the same name. Howes S981 ("aa"--"first book carrying a dedication to Washington"). Evans 14475.
