Additional Details

The first detailed reports to reach the British press of the pivotal 27 August Battle of Long Island, which gave control of New York City to the British through the remainder of the war. It begins with General William Howe's 3 September letter which describes the battle in detail, concluding "The Inhabitants of this Island, many of whom had been forced into Rebellion, have all submitted, and are ready to take the Oath of Allegiance." This is followed by a detailed 3-column "Return of Prisoners taken on Long Island, 27th August, 1776," General Howe's "return of Brass and Iron Ordnance taken from the Enemy," his return of British casualties, and finally his brother Vice-Admiral Richard Howe's 31 August letter on the naval operations.
