first american edition, variant state with 4-line description of the author on title page. It was first advertised on 24 June 1776, ten days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Following Tucker's original essay (first published in England in 1774) are two essays apparently by the American printer Robert Bell: "A Few More Words on the Freedom of the Press" and "A Short Answer to Some Criticisms." The volume concludes with one leaf of Bell's book advertisements, including a selection of military manuals, "some of them very valuable and seldom to be met with."
