Additional Details

Depicts the 20 September 1777 Battle of Paoli Tavern at Tredyffrin, PA, part of the British advance on Philadelphia in the wake of the Battle of Brandywine. Washington had stationed Mad Anthony Wayne's Pennsylvania Division in the area to harass the British advance, but they were swiftly overwhelmed. Rumors of executed prisoners led to the battle being also known as the Paoli Massacre. This British map does not address those allegations. It depicts "Rebels Canons which were carried off on the first Allarm" and "the Rebels flying in Disorder." The British took possession of Philadelphia the next week, while the rebels went into winter quarters at Valley Forge. The map was issued as both separately and as part of Faden's North American Atlas. Nebenzahl, Atlas of the American Revolution 25; Snyder, City of Independence 279.
