The first class of Northumberland militia was ordered east to Bristol on the New Jersey border on 14 June 1777, as part of the effort to hold off the British in the Philadelphia campaign. This account of their supplies was compiled by Joseph Green (1720-1802), a member of the county's Committee of Safety who later served as commissary of supplies for the Sullivan expedition in 1779. The list is very detailed, with many dozens of purchases from individual farmers listed, mostly for beef and wheat. A Mr. Baker was paid for "bringin amonition to camp", and costs are also posted for "burying a man drownded." The final charges are for 202 gallons of liquor bought from 15 different purveyors.
