(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--1778.) Muster roll of Hugh Maxwell's company in the Massachusetts Line. Manuscript, 16 x 13 inches, signed by H. Sewall on recto and Colonel Michael Jackson and Captain Hugh Maxwell on verso. Hartford, CT, 2 November 1778

Additional Details

Captain Hugh Maxwell raised this company in his home town of Charlemont in western Massachusetts. They served under Colonel John Bailey in the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment of the Massachusetts Line. They had fought at Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, and most recently at Monmouth, and had spent the previous winter at Valley Forge. This muster roll lists the company's 3 officers, 14 non-commissioned officers and musicians with their dates of appointment, and 37 privates with their dates of enlistment. The "remarks" column shows one sergeant wounded on furlough, three recuperating from illness in various locations, and one invalid. One private was detailed "on comand Dr. Cutting," assisting the army's chief apothecary John Brown Cutting.
