Additional Details

Elizabeth Phillips Gates (circa 1728-1783) was the wife of the American Major General Horatio Gates. Here she writes "The various changes that attend a military life are peculiarly distressing to the ladies and we can only wish that those happy days will soon return, when friendship and domestic peace may be enjoy'd without cruel interruptions we have now been so long subject to."
