Additional Details

An official pay order for the famed printer of the Declaration of Independence. The pay order on recto is signed by speaker John Bayard and addressed to state treasurer David Rittenhouse, ordering him to "pay to Mr. John Dunlap the sum of seven thousand two hundred & thirty pounds, it being a ballance for printin the laws &c for the General Assembly." On verso, Dunlap wrote a signed note to Rittenhouse: "Your paying the within contents to the bearer will oblige your very humble servant." On 1 June 1780 he added another signed note: "Rec'd on the within order six thousand pounds." The balance was later signed for by John Hayes on Dunlap's behalf. Evans lists several printings by Dunlap for Pennsylvania in 1780, including installments of the laws in January and May (#16930-1). Provenance: sold by Walter Benjamin to the consignor, 20 February 1979.
