(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--1780.) Lista de los Buques de la Marina de Francia. Letterpress broadside, 15 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches; folds, unevenly trimmed, stitch holes in margin. Mexico: Felipe de Zuñiga y Ontiveros, 1780

Additional Details

A detailed Spanish inventory of the French naval forces as of June 1779. Of American interest are Comte de Grasse's squadron, recently arrived in America; and the squadron which was to accompany La Fayette on his return to America. The list also shows portions of the fleet that played an important role in the Caribbean, including Comte de Guichen's division. Spain and France were allies against England at this point, but it is unclear why a Mexican audience would want such detailed information about the French fleet. The imprint line suggests that the first edition of this broadside was printed in Puerto de Santa María in Spain. We find no copies of either edition in OCLC or at auction, nor have we traced any larger publication in which either printing might have plausibly appeared as a plate.
