Additional Details

In June 1779, British troops under General Francis McLean (1717-1781) occupied a peninsula in what is now Castine, Maine and constructed Fort George. American efforts to besiege and take the fort in July and August resulted in a disastrous defeat. The British remained in control of Fort George until the peace treaty was signed in 1783.
We can trace no other McLean signatures at auction since a similar document was sold in 1912. Provenance: from the collection of William Wheeler III.
