Additional Details

Major Trescott reports on the state of affairs at West Point to his absent commander. He complains at length about the regiment's delinquent captains and lieutenants: "Never did an army want officers more than ours. I have only four of them fit for duty. What shall I do with [Abner] Dow, he certainly ought to join or die." He also relays a report on the Southern theater: "Our army was in a bad situation, owing to the superiority of the enemy. Before this you will no doubt hear of the defeat of Genl. Greene near Camden. Dam the country, they are dead, especially at the south end." Provenance: Charles Hamilton sale, 14 October 1964, lot 195, to the consignor.
