"When I was in Boston, I received a letter from Colo. Greaton . . . urging me in the most pressing terms to procure five hundred hats for the Third Mass'tts Reg't and assuring me the money should be paid in a very few weeks. My zeal to serve the reg't induced me to make the attempt. I could find but one person in Boston who had them to dispose of, and he would not consent to sell them on credit. . . . It is in my power, by disposing of my state securities at a quarter part the value, which I have so hardly earned by more than seven years service, to fulfill my engagements." Hull was later a general in the War of 1812, and gained a degree of infamy when he surrendered Detroit to an inferior British force.
