Group of 50 pay orders for Connecticut regiments. 50 leaves, various sizes and conditions, some printed forms and some manuscript orders, each signed by one or more members of the Pay-Table Committee, most countersigned by an auditor, and some endorsed on verso by recipients. This is a group of orders to pay military expenses from the Connecticut state treasury. Most of the orders appear to be for regimental paymasters or quartermasters; others offer more detailed information. One of the earliest is dated 15 June 1775, the day after the formation of the Continental Army, and orders a payment to "the selectmen of Canterbury . . . for service & expense of Capt. Sherebiah Butt & company in the late alarm." One dated 3 June 1777 orders Susannah Morley to be paid for "a stand of arms lost in the service of this state, carried by Jno. Morly of Col. Gay's Regt." Another from 30 December 1776 orders John Pratt to be paid "for expence of his sickness on his return from service in the militia at N York." On 28 October 1779, the committee ordered a payment made to the selectmen of Pomfret for "supporting Charles Traven a French Man." On 20 December 1776, an order was issued for "Ebenezar Mack a soldier captivated from the Connecticut forces in Canada in 1775 & now returned home."
These documents are also of considerable autograph interest. Among the committee members who signed these documents was Oliver Ellsworth, who signed 20 of them. Maj. Gen. Jedediah Huntington signed 17 as an auditor. Oliver Wolcott Jr., later Washington's Secretary of the Treasury, signed 5 as a committee member and countersigned 3 more as an auditor.
