Additional Details

The inscription reads in full "E Pluribus Unum, America's Independence when Cemented by the Blood of Heroes and Ennobled by the Sacrifice of Martyrs and Heroes was Established in 1776 on an Everlasting Foundation by most Unparalleled Exertions of Wisdom and Valor." We can find nothing on the creator, C.S. Hare. This piece was offered for sale in the 1877 Americana catalogue of Amsterdam dealer Frederik Muller, item 564, where the date was given as "about 1815." It arrived at Swann from a consignor in the Netherlands, where it presumably had remained from 1877 until now.
