Prints the heavily edited text of John Adams's letter to Abigail (which was actually dated 3 July 1776): "Yesterday the greatest question was decided which was ever decided among men . . . It will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the Great Anniversary Festival . . . solemnized with pomp, shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations." Two other copies traced, and none known at auction.
