Additional Details

This volume tells a tangled story of provenance. Abraham Tomlinson of Poughkeepsie, NY assembled an impressive Revolutionary War collection in the 1850s which he exhibited at his own Poughkeepsie Museum as early as 1852. The present volume is a massive list of the material which he placed on deposit in March 1859 with the Astor Library (a predecessor of the New York Public Library). The later notes in the rear of the volume explain that Tomlinson sold some of his collection to the Mercantile Library Association by 1861, which was then placed on deposit with the New York Public Library before 1932. Other material went to the Poughkeepsie Public Library and then to Vassar, but subsequently disappeared. It appears that many people have attempted to untangle this puzzle over the years; this volume may help.
