Additional Details

Riker had previously served as a surgeon in the 4th New Jersey regiment at Valley Forge, but left the service earlier in 1779. He wrote to his wife Susannah in Rocky Hill, NJ: "As we were returning home from Cheasquakes, fell in with and were made prisoners by a party of the British troops, by whom we were treated with every mark of tenderness prisoners could by any means expect. We are now in New York, all in good health, where are very well supply'd with every thing." Interestingly, he signed as John B. Riker, and appended a note reading "Jack Berrien desires Col. Vandyck would make use of all his interest to effect his exchange." Riker was later exchanged.
