Additional Details

A list of the 263 prisoners taken by the British at the October 1777 Battle of Forts Clinton and Montgomery. Joshua Loring (1744-1789), who compiled this list, was an American Loyalist who served the British as Deputy Commissary of Prisoners. He was infamous for profiting from the sale of provisions intended for the starving prisoners. The present notice is addressed to the families of captured American soldiers, who are "requested to deliver such supplies as they mean to send for the use of prisoners to Col. Taylor at Newburgh, who is empowered to forward the same to New York." Bristol B4684. Only 2 copies listed in ESTC, and none known at auction since 1966.
