Early issues of the first newspaper in Dutchess County, NY, which relocated from New York City in January 1777. The full title was usually "The New-York Packet, and the American Advertiser." Among the highlights in this lot are an appearance of Thomas Jefferson's "Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom" (1 June 1780); reports on the surrender of Charleston (22 June 1780); Benedict Arnold's address "To the Inhabitants of America," captioned as "the feeble efforts of the basest Villain on earth, to justify his conduct" (26 October 1780, defective); a report on the Battle of Cowpens (22 February 1781); and correspondence regarding the British surrender at Yorktown (8 November 1781, defective).
