Additional Details

This issue of the famed Loyalist newspaper was issued the day after the Battle of Lexington, but the news had not yet reached New York. Most notable in this issue is a report that the publisher James Rivington had recently been hung in effigy. Rivington published a woodcut of the hanging, along with his defiant response, describing his patriot antagonists as "little, shabby, piddling politicians," "snarling curs," and "the very dregs of the city" whose goal was to establish "a most cruel tyranny."
