Additional Details

On 21 July 1774, a group of representatives from each New Hampshire town met in Exeter and agreed to send delegates to the proposed First Continental Congress. They also voted that £200 "generously contributed by the several Towns . . . be paid to the Treasurer that may be appointed to receive the same to defray the Expence of sending the Delegates." Colonel Josiah Bartlett gave treasurer John Giddings £3:18 as Kingston, NH's share. In return, Giddings gave him this receipt. A remarkable survival from New Hampshire's earliest formal efforts toward independence. Provenance: Bartlett family, by descent; auctioned to Seaport Autographs, 24 June 1989, and later sold to the consignor.
