The "Pennsylvania Journal and the Weekly Advertiser" used this "Unite or Die" masthead from 12 July 1774 to 18 October 1775, adapting the "Join or Die" engraving first used in 1754. This issue includes interesting reporting on the coming conflict. The Newport correspondent writes: "General Gage has sent a number of spies into the country; and we dare say that the more he spies, the less he will like to commence hostilities!" Also included are a report from the newly formed Committee of Correspondence in Reading, PA, with their letter to "The inhabitants of Berks County": "The affairs of America grow every day more serious, and our unhappy disputes hasten to a conclusion." In more routine news, the election of Doctor Benjamin Franklin to the presidency of the American Philosophical Society is announced.
