Additional Details

The French hero of the American Revolution is here depicted as leader of the National Guard of France, trying to maintain order during the early days of his own nation's revolution. He is depicted reviewing his troops. In the background, a valet of African descent holds his horse, reminiscent of Trumbull's portrait of Washington.
This was Debucourt's first work in mezzotint, inked "à la poupée"--the colors were applied directly to the plate (per the British Museum).
