(ANDROS, EDMUND.) Bill for the funeral expenses of Governor Andros. Manuscript document, one page, 12 x 7 1/2 inches; minor wear, soiling to docket panel on verso. [London], 18 May 1714

Additional Details

Sir Edmund Andros, after a long and controversial career as governor of New York, New England and Virginia, returned to London for his final days. He died on 27 February 1714, and was buried in St. Anne Churchyard in Soho, London. This detailed accounting shows that money can't buy you love, but it can get you a pretty nice funeral. Although the governor had requested in his will to be "decently buried without ostentation," the coffin was "sett with the best gilt nails," and the estate was charged for silver sconces, six mourning coaches, elaborate matching cloaks, gloves, and hatbands for the coachmen, and more. The bill was paid on 18 May by his nephew and executor John Andrews, and was signed as paid by the undertaker John Hiler. Provenance: Sothebys London sale, 12 December 1977, lot 166, to Schumann.
