Aldam." 4to, original pictorial gilt publisher's green pebble cloth, extremities rubbed, small unotbtrusive repair at head of spine, all edges gilt; moderate foxing throughout. London: John B. Approximately 200 copies of this beautiful presentation, acknowledged as the first to use actual tied flies as means for illustration, were originally printed. Aldam states it was "Printed from an Old MS never before published," however the manuscript's original author was revealed over a century after publication as one Robert Whitehead, about whom little is known. The skillfully tied flies are tipped in with multi-colored serrated tabs and the patterns and hackle are well preserved. Scarce with the variant photograph of the author in repose contemplating a copy of his work lying on his writing desk.
