first edition. Anson was sent by the British crown to disrupt Spanish trading on the west coast of South America. The British were at war with Spain and it was hoped that the Spanish would be injured by the loss of the wealth pouring out of Peruvian mines. Anson's flagship the Centurion first spent time off the coast of Chile, sacked the small Peruvian town of Paita, went on to Acapulco, visited various Pacific islands, stopped in Macau and Canton, and made a dramatic capture of a galleon bound for Manila before returning to England.
The narrative recounts Anson's exploits as compiled from his journals by the shipboard chaplain, Richard Walter. The volume underwent a number of editions and was probably the most popular maritime narrative of its century. "A masterpiece of descriptive travel"--Hill 1817. Palau 12865; Sabin 1625.
