The first volume is inscribed "To Miss Annie E. Dann, In recognition of her cheerful helpfulness during the many months of the work of getting out these pages--and with the love of her sincere friend, Susan B. Anthony, Rochester N.Y. May 24, 1899--Queen Victoria's 80th Birth Day!!" Two later postage stamps of Anthony have been affixed to the page. The second volume is absent, and the third volume (published after Anthony's death) is not inscribed. Anna Dann was described in the third volume, page 1260, as "Miss Anthony's dearly-loved secretary and companion . . . like one of the family, able and ready not only to fulfil the duties of a secretary but also to answer all the complex demands of a household."
