Motifs d'Architecture Russe: choisis dans le recueil périodique publié sous ce même titre à Saint-Pétersbourg. 60 chromolithographed images of Russian public and private buildings, details, and ornamentation on 49 plates (many double-paged and -numbered). Folio, original printed grey boards, recased and rebacked in blue cloth, some crude repair work to outer edges; endpapers renewed, scattered foxing and some marginal soiling but most plates clean and still very bright with stong color, some trimmed along bottom or fore edges, occasionally affecting text, dampstaining along lower margin of first few leaves. The decorative folk styles exemplified in these designs were prompted by the emancipation reform of 1861 and subsequent reforms of Alexander II that pushed the liberal elite into exploring the roots of their national culture. Architects like Ivan Ropet and Viktor Hartmann pioneered this neo-Russian style and created their own vision of "vernacular" architecture, in part influenced by the Narodnik movement which idealized the peasant life and rejected western decadence that dominated civil construction of 1850s-1860s.
